Punters have made their call loud and clear, and the head-to-head ledger backs them: Bencic leads the all-time series 3–2, taking the last two meetings in 2020 and 2022 in straight sets.

Putintseva's last outing was a Friday 14 August loss to Liudmila Samsonova — a three-set grind (6–7, 5–7, 5–7) that pushed her losing run to four. Before that came consecutive defeats to Zhang Shuai (twice, including once at home on 4 August) and Elina Avanesyan in late July. None of the four went her way, and the 15–15 year-to-date record tells the tale of a player stuck in the middle: good enough to hang around the tour (career 290–276, 51% win rate), but short of the firepower to crack the top tier. The two wins before that were equally emphatic: Taylor Townsend dismissed 6–7, 7–6, 6–4 on 8 August, and an unnamed opponent swept 6–3, 6–1 on 6 August. That's nine sets won from the last nine contested, and the 27–11 season record (71% win rate) sits comfortably above her 332–196 career mark (63%). Ranked No.12 in the world with 2,845 points, the Swiss right-hander claimed one title this year and has proven herself at the elite level — her career-best ranking of No.4 is a distant memory, but the class remains.

When these two last met in December 2022, Bencic won 7–6, 6–3. Before that, another Bencic straight-setter in February 2020 (6–4, 6–3). Putintseva's lone win in the series came in March 2019 (6–7, 7–5), sandwiched between two Bencic victories. On hard courts — the surface for all four prior meetings — Bencic holds the same 3–2 advantage, and nothing in the current form or the market suggests that pattern is about to reverse. The head-to-head favourite is the Swiss at $1.19, and the odds have only tightened as match time approaches.
