Race preview

Coonabarabran's opening sprint on Saturday at 1:20 pm AEDT is a Maiden Showcase over 900 metres on good ground, and the market has it pretty well sorted. Fratianno leads the charge in the win market, with Haveaniceday and Boioboi sharing the next line. This is classic maidens stuff—plenty of first-starters and blokes copping a quick back-up—so the form line reads harder than most, but there's a narrative brewing beneath the surface.

Fratianno sits shortest and deserves the quote. The four-year-old has knocked on the door with seven minor placings from 22 starts, most recently running third in a Super Maiden at Port Macquarie over 1004 metres before stepping back to this 900-metre trip. Luke Rolls rides for trainer Colt Prosser, and the jockey is outperforming career averages by 39 per cent in his last 100 rides—he's winning at 27 per cent. The comment flags Fratianno as primed to strike; he was close up in a sound performance, and that drop to sprint distance is exactly what the ratings suggest. This one looks overdue.

Boioboi, from barrier 3, disappointed as favourite on debut at Dubbo over 1000 metres on heavy going early last month but rates notably better for that run. The drop to 900 metres is favourable, and a switch to good ground should help. Trainer-jockey Wendy Peel hasn't set the track alight—striking at just 11 per cent—but there's enough chop in the market to suggest the mare herself is the story here. Haveaniceday on debut shapes as a trial runner with decent credentials: a $8,000 purchase out of a winning mare, and encouraging barrier trials at Narromine. Jake Pracey-Holmes took the ride from those trials, though the data hints at a less suitable jockey engagement. The first-starter sits in the betting for good reason, but there's water to cross. Fratianno's form line and the jockey ROI make him the play here.
