Corowa hosts a Benchmark 66 handicap over the mile on a soft track with rain falling, jumping at 3:20 pm. The win market opens with Trooper as the clear leader, followed by Jugiong, Marine Girl, and Before The War. All four carry form credentials, though this is a tricky field on the quick back-up from strong efforts at their last starts.

Trooper rates the standout proposition here. The four-year-old won at Moruya last campaign and trialled over at Canberra before today's return from a 21-week break. Trainer Natalie Jarvis and jockey Damon Budler are out-performing market expectations by 63 per cent, a combo firing on all cylinders. Trooper carries the high rating (100 IRD) and maps to lead from barrier three, which suits a natural pace-setter. The question is whether those legs have sharpened sufficiently over the break. Jugiong sits next in the betting despite a 13-week spell but has run well fresh before—the mare won at track and distance previously and shapes as a genuine first-up contender. Pierre Boudvillain takes the ride, though Sylvia Thompson's strike rate sits at just five per cent, worth noting. Before The War is the value angle. Resuming after 23 weeks, the gelding won at Wagga in soft ground last time and has been primed with a Wangaratta trial. Alice Kennedy replaces the rider from that win, a negative swap, yet the form line suggests solid preparation. The fast-finishing sectionals at Wagga hint at something cooked.

Marine Girl deserves respect off the map. Drawn in two and positioned onpace, the filly ran respectable fourths at Bathurst and Cootamundra in recent BM66 starts on good tracks—the transition to soft might suit better. Pretty Panther is one to respect late if the pace genuinely runs, though the debut win is a slender form reference. The rails barrier, a long lead-up, and conditions on the turn of the term make this a race for horses ready to fire off the back of their trials.
