Race preview

Tamworth threw up a country maiden handicap over 1200 metres on a soft five track under fine skies, and the result has already been decided. The win market shaped with Syllable as the shortest-priced runner, followed by Super Vitality, then Burning Ambition and Half Gage jostling for third. The race played out with early leaders Warrawee and Syllable setting the tempo, while the speed brigade of Street Empress and Half Gage tucked in on pace. It's a tale of two campaigns — some runners shaking off the cobwebs, others hunting a breakthrough.

Syllable caught plenty of eyeballs in the preview. The filly has rattled off back-to-back placings at Tamworth over this exact distance, going down by a length and a bit when second-up last time out. Rory Hutchings is riding with real spark, outperforming his career average by 33 per cent in his last 100 rides, though Holly Williams' camp is struggling at just 7 per cent strike rate lately. The form line reads brave, and the rating of 85 suggests a genuine contender — just needed that breakthrough moment. Super Vitality came in as the second choice, a three-week returner on his second campaign who trialled strongly and posted some decent efforts from early outings. The worry sits with the trainer-jockey combo's recent losing record, but Reece Jones himself has been operating 22 per cent above career average. Half Gage, meanwhile, drew barrier 12 and maps well for this track, outperforming market expectations by 7 per cent — Anna Weatherlake takes the ride on a runner now wiser for a debut at Dubbo where it ran on into the minors. That barrier 12 spot has its quirks, but the map suits.

Burning Ambition deserves a mention despite the outside gate. The resuming type has been away 22 weeks but trialled encouragingly under new trainer C K Martin and comes from the James Ponsonby camp. The jockey change to Shannen Llewellyn is a question mark — she's underperforming market by 31 per cent in recent runs — yet the new stable angle and trial form paint a different picture. The Last Romanov and jenny Duggan have clicked at 48 per cent above career average, and that combination with a hot trainer-jockey pairing offering 91 per cent above market expectation, could spring a surprise from barrier 8.

Went down by a neck over 5½f at Armidale (handicap) last month when just behind Totally Underrated; appears to be on the upgrade judged on two most recent runs but winless with run of consecutive defeats standing at 13.
