Welcome to Townsville for this afternoon meeting where the track is rated a soft 5 under overcast skies. Race seven is the Mick Harris 50th handicap over the 1609m trip, bringing together a handy field of battlers and stayers. Looking at the early win market order, punters have zeroed in on Intruder sitting right at the head of affairs, followed closely by Ask Me Mate and Beta Better, with Khals and Garinion Righ next in line in the betting ring.

The yarn behind the shorter-priced runners tells an interesting story. Intruder comes in for Ms J Hassett carrying top weight of 60kg from barrier one, looking to bounce back quickly after just missing here over 1400m when fighting on bravely for second. The speed map suggests an easy lead might be on the cards from the inside alley. Meanwhile, Ask Me Mate for William Kenning lines up from barrier eight following a consistent third over 1400m at this track where he kept coming despite the winner being too strong, and Anthony Allen takes the mount with solid riding form behind him.

Further down the race book, Beta Better for Belynda Kliese catches the eye after showing plenty of fight to win over 1810m at Bowen before shifting back to this 1609m distance, bringing winning form from an onpace speed map position. Khals also backs up quickly from a previous run at this venue where things did not entirely go to plan, rounding out a fascinating contest where track specialists and short backups will dictate how the race unfolds.

Racing on a quick back up. Right in contention last run at the track and will try to take advantage of the barrier. Should muster plenty of early speed. Good enough chance at a very tempting price.

Producing consistent form; a winner over C&D; missed out by a nose over 7f here (handicap, had Ask Me Mate and Khals behind) on first run for current trainer a week ago.
