Balaklava's 7th race today is a Benchmark 56 sprint over 1050m on a Good 4 track under overcast skies at 6:00 pm AEDT. The market leads with Extra Fling, a promising three-year-old on debut who has already run a place at this track last campaign. Musical Sunset, Rich Lady and Reoffer follow in the win order. This is a tight BM56 field where form and fitness will separate them, and the barrier draw has shuffled some solid chances into awkward spots.

Extra Fling looks the obvious choice from a pure form angle. The Stephen Potter-trained filly won on debut at Strathalbyn over 1100m before running a narrow second to Musical Sunset at this very venue over 1050m in a maiden. She's had 18 weeks away and rates 100 on IRD metrics. Jockey Sophie Potter is booking 29 per cent above market expectation over her last 100 rides, and the stable's runners sit at 7 per cent profit on turnover lately. That form profile and timing suggest a genuine winning hope. Rich Lady, drawn barrier 4, is worth serious consideration as a roughie. She ran a close second at Balaklava off a long break last time out and form lines show she rarely misses the action second-up. The AAP comment notes she strips fitter, and at barrier 4 she can find a spot in the onpace crew. Musical Sunset has won here before and knows this track well, though she's awkwardly at barrier 13.

The leader group—Extra Fling, Cuban Waters, Reoffer and One Whim—will vie for position early. Sioux Warrior, drawing barrier 1, sits in the onpace speed group and comes from a stable performing 54 per cent above market expectation; his jockey Jordyn Weatherley has back-to-back wins in her last 10 rides. Captainwackydoodle has the fastest finishing sectionals from last start and Caitlin Tootell is running hot. However, barrier 9 makes a come-from-behind bid a tough task in a sprint. The yarn here tilts toward Extra Fling as the logical play, but Rich Lady's value shines through as a second-up sprinter who flew home at this track three runs back.

First up after 32 weeks and went to the front and never looked back when winning by 1L first up last preparation at Gawler. First start for a new trainer. Big improvement required to threaten these.

Finished tenth of 12 in March; fitted with blinkers for the first time; returns from a layoff; winner three starts back and too soon to write her off; should prove competitive.
