Race preview

Gatton hosts a maiden plate over 860 metres in the soft going with rain continuing to fall. This is a first-up assignment for most of the field, and the win market sets Pinot Pirate as the shortest-priced runner, with Stellique next in, followed by Zandari and Black Rhino. All bar one of the nine starters are trialled maidens, so we're hunting form lines from the trial paddock and recent work.

Pinot Pirate holds solid trial credentials and a jockey in Tahlia Fenlon who is outperforming her career average by 19 per cent across her last 100 rides. The mare won at Gold Coast over 1000 metres in soft going and looks to have the form edge on paper. Stellique, trained by Barry Lockwood and Emma-Jane Vincent, won her latest trial at Deagon and draws barrier one—a handy alley on soft ground. Her jockey Anthony Allen is also running well above expectation, but the rating of 73 suggests Pinot Pirate's rating of 100 has genuine substance. Black Rhino runs second-up after showing promise in a trial at Gold Coast, though the trainer strike rate sits at 7 per cent and a rider change today is a minor knock to consider.

Zandari commands respect despite barrier ten. The mare is resuming after 25 weeks for a new stable and has trialled twice—two pleasing runs that frame her as a chance on the quick back-up. Her last start before the spell was a narrow second in a 2Y handicap at Ipswich, and she posted the fastest finishing sectionals last time out. That speed signature and return from a spell with genuine trial form make her a genuine roughie worth following in the market.
