Race preview

The Coorparoo Park Stan Sadleir Stakes at Wagga is a 1400-metre Open class sprint on Good 4 going under fine skies at 4:55 pm AEDT. Sister Shay heads the win market, with Cando Attitude and Urafiki next in line. It's a race where the placegetters will likely come from a packed midfield group — Associate, Urafiki, Hell Of A Fox, and Mathrin all sit in that lane — while the speed should come from Sister Shay on front and Cando Attitude and Quamby on pace. Confrontational, Paparazzo, and Daze Off profile as offpace types nursing the back half of the field, which gives them every chance to run on into the money if the tempo suits.

Sister Shay, shortest at the post, has trainer C D Widdison's recent form working against the stable, though her own rating of 88 and a solid second-up record suggest she'll be sharper and more effective this time than when she ran a reasonable effort against her own gender at Seymour. On the other end, Cando Attitude carries the highest rating at 100 and won the only other time she raced here at Wagga; she's on a short back-up after running midfield in the Federal Handicap at Canberra, but the AAP comment flags she's capable of making an impact with even breaks. Urafiki knows Wagga well and boasts a winning first-up record, though her 77 rating and poor distance form are concerns; the form suggests she can fill the minors here if she settles kindly. Hell Of A Fox, rated 87, kept finding the line second-up at this venue without threatening, and rider Jean Van Overmeire is in outstanding touch, outperforming his career average by 38 per cent over his last hundred rides.

Daze Off merits a look further down the market; trainer Doug Gorrel is in fine form, outperforming the market by 72 per cent, and the stable is running at a healthy 54 per cent return on investment across the last hundred runners. Paparazzo, rated as an offpace runner in a map that suits, profiles nicely from barrier 4 with trainer Craig Weeding's stable running at 19 per cent ROI. The midfield congestion is the race's defining feature, so early pace and a bit of clear air at the business end will be worth their weight in gold.
