Ballina's Boxing Day Maiden Plate over 1400 metres on the SOFT7 track this arvo shapes as a genuine puzzle with Testy Nic and The Minstrel Boy shortest in the market, followed by To'O and Qui Rouge. The field is dotted with maidens who've tasted the grind without clicking yet, and the form's thin enough to make this a proper punter's guessing game. Fine weather tops a soft surface that should suit runners comfortable in the conditions.

Testy Nic sits favourite out of barrier one, and the form reads as modest for a winning chance — recent starts at Sunshine Coast and Warwick both netted fourths, beaten under three lengths at Warwick but nothing that shouts readiness. Trainer Kristie Clark-Peoples carries a career strike-rate of just 8 per cent. The Minstrel Boy, from the Lee stable, has won one from three starts and was a placing runner over this exact distance at Pakenham on synthetic. His barrier six suits his Leader profile, and the yard's support — described as backing him as a key player — rings true: he's on the quick back-up after showing promise, and maps nicely for this circuit. To'O comes third-favoured and brings early speed, a handy trait here. The form around him is modest, but a recent effort at Lismore on the same SOFT7 track came with late work, and he's sharper second-up. His jockey-trainer combination with D A Mccolm has been outperforming market expectations by 79 per cent.

Qui Rouge rounds out the quartet and brings Luke Rolls, a jockey running 50 per cent above market expected over his last 100 rides. She's been under the care of Samantha Mcguren just once — at Port Macquarie — and that debut under the new trainer showed a willingness without the goods. The puzzle of this race is which of these four will click first, and while form lines are thin, the jockey-trainer angles on The Minstrel Boy and To'O suggest punters might have reason to favour their chances.
