Welcome to Bathurst for the Gold Circle Mdn Plate over 1400m on a Soft 5 track with fine weather overhead. The local punters are lining up to dissect this maiden puzzle, and the early win market order has Hellfire Henry sitting at the head of affairs. Following closely in the market order come Charlie Hustle, King Julian, and Spud Gun, setting up an intriguing race where everyone is searching for that elusive first win on the board.

Taking a look at the form behind those shorter prices, Hellfire Henry is drawn in barrier 3 with Louise Day taking the mount for trainer J M Austin. This runner was on pace and courageous in defeat at Canberra second-up and performed really well in their only other go at this course and trip, putting them right in the mix from a perfect draw. Meanwhile, Charlie Hustle jumps from barrier 9 for jockey Jess Taylor and trainer C Karakatsanis. Unplaced previously, this runner was ridden cold and never in the picture at Illawarra Grange off a long break, but should strip fitter second-up and gets a chance here. King Julian represents the Peter Snowden stable from barrier 4 with Deon Le Roux steering, having learnt plenty from a debut assignment at Illawarra Grange where the Snowden-trained colt found the task beyond him as a despised outsider.

Looking further down the field for another angle, Amahtrom comes in from barrier 6 with Damon Budler for Rob Potter, carrying the tag of a fast finisher after recording the fastest overall finishing sectionals last start alongside a map position suited to this track. Audacity and Lindos both show early speed which can be an advantage on this circuit, while Spud Gun maps well for Jack Pilkington and Keagan Latham. It shapes as a fascinating form line test for punters as the field heads to the 1400m start.

On pace and courageous in defeat at Canberra second-up. Performed really well only other go this course and trip. Right in the mix from perfect draw.

Started at $2.45 and gave ground late when 5th last time at Canberra. Has early speed and positions nicely. Worth a lot of thought in this race.

Without a win in five attempts although has finished second; came up a bit short, beaten 1½l when favourite, over 6f at Canberra (maiden, just behind Amahtrom) three weeks ago; warrants plenty of respect given several of his rivals have questions to answer.

Seems to have stepped up on previous form the last twice but yet to get off the mark and losing run stands at 16; respectable effort when fourth (Forbes) on Saturday in a handicap; not hard to turn elsewhere.
