Welcome to Taree for the Taree Kia Lightning Sprint over the 1000m dash, where a competitive field of open sprinters has assembled under overcast skies on a Soft 7 track. The market has found its initial leader with Grassburn sitting proudly at the top of the win market order, closely followed by Speck, Pratt, and Stupendo down the line. It is a sharp sprint where every section counts on this surface, and the punters are looking closely at how this yarn will unfold once they jump at 3:30 pm AEDT.

Taking a look at the form behind those shorter prices, Speck lines up from barrier 3 with Reece Jones steering for trainer R P Northam, bringing a fresh-up record and a steely Moree Town Plate victory over 950m under the belt. Pratt is drawn in barrier 7 for Cassandra Schmidt and Daniel Smith, coming off a gritty win over 1008m right here at Taree on a soft track where it showed it handles wet ground and can press forward. Meanwhile, Grassburn jumps from barrier 4 for trainer M J Robinson and Mollie Fitzgerald, arriving on the quick back-up after a strong win over 1000m at Port Macquarie.

Digging deeper into the speed map and angles, the speed groups show Pratt and Cool Fizz lining up as the early leaders looking to burn gas, while Speck, Grassburn, and Stupendo settle off the pace. Stupendo maps from barrier 5 for Matthew Kelley and Coriah Keatings, coming off a solid second at Canberra over 1200m where it chased hard from the back. While the stable is going well, coming back in distance is a fresh test on this damp Taree deck, leaving plenty of intrigue in a cracking sprint where punters will be keen to weigh up the on-pace runners against those stalking from behind.

Gained a 1½l success (Moree) 40 days ago; admirable career strike-rate (six from 21 to date); the Rodney Northam operation is running hot currently; one to consider.
