Echuca kicks off the afternoon with the Mdn Plate over 1000 metres on a soft track under fine conditions at 3:26 pm AEDT. This is a truly open maiden for three-year-olds and older, and the win market reflects plenty of conjecture. Xtra Black is shortest, with Kiss Me In Paris and Duchess Xenia next in line, followed by Dark Galaxy. The field is split between those with raceday form and a handful of first-starters, so there's real narrative tension here—maiden racing rarely settles itself quickly.

Xtra Black, rated 100 by IRD, brings the highest rating into the race and is first named out of an unraced mare. The form comment reads well: finished second in a recent Wodonga jumpout and looks suitably placed. However, it's a first-start, so there's always that unknown. Kiss Me In Paris has won a Flemington jumpout since its Ballarat maiden run and lost a shoe whilst holding on fairly when sent forward at Ballarat—a form line suggesting genuine ability. With Damien Thornton in the saddle, who is running 24 per cent above market expected in his last 100 rides, there's real merit to following that story. Duchess Xenia also won a jumpout at Flemington and finished third in a barrier trial at Caulfield Heath on soft track, closer to race conditions than most. Dark Galaxy is resuming after 18 weeks and has form at the track; it was runner-up here and rates 81, with AAP noting it figures in the placings. The fast finishing sectionals on the way to that placement and the map suit at this circuit count in its favour.

Bold Amore sits on pace and has jockey Holly Durnan aboard, whose recent POT is 34 per cent better than career average—a rider in genuine form. The field has several first-starters, which can muddy the waters in maidens, but the Echuca track favours early speed; both Kiss Me In Paris and Duchess Xenia have early pace to exploit from reasonable barriers. The soft ground will test stamina over the short 1000 metres. Opinion leans toward Kiss Me In Paris or Duchess Xenia to test the market order on the basis of recent jumpout wins and genuine race craft, though Dark Galaxy's track knowledge and finishing kick offer genuine roughie appeal for those keen to hunt value.
