Race preview

The Team Poly Tanks Mdn Plate at Murray Bridge on a Good 4 track under overcast skies shapes as a race where the form book is thin and the early leaders could set up a testing tempo. At 1400 metres with a three-year-old and older maiden field, the win market is led by Pocket Pyro, followed by Never Pegasus, Ludina, and Grand Millesime. Pocket Pyro rates highly at 100 according to IRD, with the comment noting the runner has been supported at each run and kept on courageously at the second appearance. Never Pegasus, drawn to effect in barrier 3, was supported at each outing and showed plenty of ticker to just go under at Penola over this trip, suggesting the 1400 metres is a suitable distance. Ludina, resuming after 12 weeks, has form predominantly over longer trips and may need the run on the quick back-up here. Grand Millesime, rated 87, showed something in the last few runs and was only four lengths from the winner at Halidon last time, though the stable assessment suggests a place prospect looks more likely.

The early speed is shared among Ashen Glow, Grand Millesime, and Pretty Morsel, who will jockey for position on pace, while Never Pegasus and Secret Owl sit as leaders from the barriers. Never Pegasus has Jake Toeroek in the saddle—the jockey is riding 22 per cent above market expected in the last 100 rides and has been 19 per cent better than career average recently, a small positive for a three-year-old that rates 90 and was only fractions away at Penola over this exact distance. Pocket Pyro, rated 100 and drawn in barrier 8, will race offpace and has scope for improvement having won support at consecutive runs at Balaklava, where the form line and backed prices suggest genuine ability. The jockey and trainer combinations on several runners carry concerns—Ludina's pairing has lost 100 per cent POT in their last 100 races, and Gingerbread Boy is in the grip of a similar cold combo.

Ludina, despite form at longer distances and a current stable striking rate of just 5 per cent, cannot be dismissed purely on fitness grounds, having run a close second at Mildura before the break. The field is littered with maiden trainers and jockey combinations underperforming expectations, making a well-backed maiden at double-figure career wins a genuine narrative. Pocket Pyro's rating of 100 sits well above peers and the supported betting at each run tells a tale; the runner rates as the logical pick, though Never Pegasus at 90 with a plausible case at the trip and positive jockey form cannot be overlooked as a roughie with narrative weight.
