Race preview

Randwick's fifth race was a Benchmark 94 handicap over 1600 metres on a Soft 6 track in showers at 2:25 pm AEST. The race has jumped. Unleeshing led the market, followed by Knobelas, Polymnia, and The Mona Lisa. The pace setup featured three leaders—Punch Lane, I'Mintowin, and Jamberoo—keen to press forward early, while Loch Eagle anchored from the back. The middle order split between an offpace trio (Palmetto, Zaphod, and The Mona Lisa), an offmidfield contingent, and a midfield crew steered by Unleeshing, Chispa, Soverato, and Mighty Ulysses.

The Maher-Nock partnership scored well at the meeting—a combo winning 26 per cent of their races in their last 100 starts and the stable outperforming market by 31 per cent. I'Mintowin came in as a leader with recent form of 4-3-1-1, suggesting appetite for the assignment. Unleeshing, shortest priced at barrier 3 for Bjorn Baker and Rachel King, had run second twice at Randwick in recent weeks and rated a 96. The book suggested the Baker-King combination were winning at 61 per cent above market expectation. The form narrative favoured Unleeshing stripping fitter for consecutive runs and stepping up in distance, though the soft going was a wildcard. The Mona Lisa, rated 75 and third in the market, won at this track over 1600 metres at its last two starts and boasted a Caves combination firing at 43 per cent above market. Knobelas, second favourite, had run second at Randwick over 1600 metres when second-up, suggesting fitness and positioning worked in its favour, though recent trainer form was patchy.

Polymnia presented an intriguing angle at odds. The horse carried a rating of 100 despite a lengthy losing run, yet fresh signs and strong late sectionals pointed to a late-race flourish. Unleeshing loomed as the narrative favourite on fitness and track form, though The Mona Lisa's twin wins and inside-midfield positioning gave reason to think there was value in the layering back through the markers. In soft ground, managing the pace and banking on late speed favoured the Caves runner, while Unleeshing's staying power over the distance seemed the logical opposing case.

Solid in two runs back. Sent forward, outgunned late but boxed on at Newcastle second-up. All the better, has some claims.

Competitive effort when 2nd last time at Newcastle but will have to carry extra weight. Has good tactical speed and will be nicely positioned. Price in this race is tempting to get involved.

Record shows he knows where the winning post is (wins-runs career record of 4-17) and has been consistent of late; creditable effort to finish runner-up over 7½f at Newcastle (Group 3) last month; might find this company a little easier but may be vulnerable.
