Race preview

Sale's listed handicap over the mile shapes as a thriller in the wet. The Ladbrokes Sale Cup at 4:30 pm AEDT will be run on Heavy 9 with rain falling, and the market has Ten Commandments and El Rocko as the two shortest wins, followed by Makdane and Freedom Rally. It's a cracking field where the going will sort out the genuine stayers from those caught out by the slog.

Ten Commandments has to be the logical pick here. The Rating 100 galloper comes off a win at Ballarat over this exact distance and is returning to proven territory after a fair run without threatening at Flemington in heavy rain last time. Trainer C Maher's stable is running at a solid 13 per cent profit on turnover through their last hundred runners, and the data suggests this horse's map position at Sale performs nine per cent better than market odds suggest—a real edge when the track is this heavy. On the quick back-up over 1600 metres, the form line stacks up nicely. El Rocko will be hard to beat from barrier 2 with early speed an advantage on this circuit, and the draw suits him down low. He's a 69-start campaigner with winning experience fresh, though last time at Caulfield he got the wobbles and faded from the placings. The weight drop and good draw here can help him atone, but the heavy going might blunt what makes him tick.

Freedom Rally presents an interesting angle as a roughie. The horse was safely held in choppy conditions at Sandown first-up as a $16 shot but had backed up the previous start with a win on Heavy 8. Jockey Beau Mertens comes in underperforming his career average by 28 per cent, which is a legitimate concern, though the horse itself ticks boxes with form at this distance and going. The AAP comment suggests he can fill the minors here rather than win, but in a race this open, the value might be worth chasing if you're keen on the form narrative.
