Race preview

Wangaratta's running a Benchmark 52 handicap over 1400 metres on a Soft 6 track this afternoon at 3:17 pm, and the market's got Sacred Ingot as the punters' pick, with Barrett Reef and Cumbrian Queen next in line. The form here is mixed — there's plenty of runners who've shown they can get close but haven't quite sealed the deal, which sets up a race where fitness and placement through the run could tell the whole yarn.

Sacred Ingot, the shortest in the market, comes to this third-up for a new stable and region after a couple of runs that haven't fired the imagination. The form comment reckons he got well back and only made headway on tired rivals at this track last time, but Cory Parish is booked and he's running 56 per cent above market expectation in his last hundred rides — a jockey in genuine form matters. Barrett Reef has been a leader type but melted under pressure here when stepped up to 1590 metres on a Good 4, and that's worth watching if the pace turns genuine. Cumbrian Queen comes third at the odds and is the standout on form — she was a fighting second at Wodonga on a Good 3 over 1400 metres second-up, and this is her third-up run where the form book says she can get that extra run.

The early pace shapes to be set by Barrett Reef and American Russ in the Leader group, with Cumbrian Queen on pace just behind them. Prince Rupert sits offmidfield and is noted as mapping well at this track, outperforming market expectations by 14 per cent, which is a data point worth considering. On balance, Cumbrian Queen's form line reads like she's peaking at just the right time, and with a rating of 98 she's the profile that makes sense in a race where several have shown hints without delivering.
