The win market lines up with Cosmic Crusader holding sway at the head of affairs, closely followed by Aeliana, Sir Delius, and Birdman rounding out the sharper end of betting. Punters looking at the yarn of the race will notice a strong tactical battle shaping up with speed groups featuring Light Infantry Man and Sir Delius pressing on-pace, while runners like Cosmic Crusader and Aeliana look to stalk from an offpace lane.

The form behind those shorter prices reads like a compelling chapter. Cosmic Crusader comes into this via Andrea Leek with William Pike aboard from barrier 10, having bided time at the back before letting down smartly to win the Cox Plate last start over 2040m on good going. Aeliana is right there in the market from barrier 4 for C J Waller and James McDonald, showing a fine turn of foot to storm home for third in that same Flemington feature. Birdman for C J Waller and Ben Melham gets out from barrier 1 off a fast-finishing second in the Cox Plate, going down narrowly after picking up strongly from the back half.
